We are occasionally asked to support start-ups and new customers to develop products from “scratch” and at some point it will be necessary to know how long our mechanical part of the product development will take so that programme plans can be drawn-up.
This article provides an illustration, based on our experiences of projects in the past.
Of course, no one schedule fits all and the programme for any specific product will vary wildly depending on an almost infinite number of factors such as the degree of technical challenge, the introduction of new technology or processes, feeds from other disciplines such as hardware & software etc. Three example projects are offered as examples only and are illustrative of development programmes for products with typical low, medium and higher levels of complexity.
